KNBC LA: Japanese American National Museum Uses AI to Preserve Lawson Sakai’s Legacy

May 23, 2024

The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in Los Angeles has partnered with StoryFile to create an interactive exhibit featuring Lawson Iichiro Sakai, a decorated World War II veteran of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Utilizing AI-driven conversational video technology, visitors can engage in lifelike Q&A sessions with Sakai, who answered over 1,000 questions in 2019 to share his experiences as a Japanese American soldier and community leader.

This immersive exhibit not only honors Sakai’s contributions but also serves as a powerful educational tool, allowing future generations to connect personally with history. The project exemplifies how AI can preserve firsthand accounts, ensuring that stories like Sakai’s remain accessible and impactful
