History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is the oldest holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. June 19th, 1865, was the day the last enslaved people in the United States learned of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and were declared free. Last year, the US Senate voted to make Juneteenth an official public U.S. holiday.  Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a day that serves great historical significance for the United States, the Black community, and the continued work to counter systemic racism.

StoryFile's Connection w/ Juneteenth

StoryFile is built on celebrating history and allowing others to tell their story in their voice. We know the importance of history and ensuring people tell, share and preserve their stories in their voices. We recognize how far society as a whole has to go to achieve any sort of real equity. At the same time, two of our guiding values as a company center upon authenticity and trust as foundational to the way we serve our customers and society more broadly.

StoryFile celebrated Juneteenth last year by hosting a program for our staff led by Elizabeth Adams. This year, we want to share the knowledge we have learned with you, and share some resources for the community to learn and preserve history.

StoryFile is dedicated to changing the way we interact with history. In February we created our Black Voices Collection in an effort to share the stories of various prominent black leaders, including leaders from the Civil Rights Movement, survivors of the Tulsa Massacre, and other influential people. Amongst those storyfiles is Daniel Smith. Daniel Smith’s father Abram was born a slave in 1863, and although his father was born a year after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, it still took an additional two years before slaves were truly freed from their slave masters. You can interact with Daniel and learn about his story and what it’s like to be a direct descendant of a man born into slavery.
